What modules are offered in the stroke awareness training?

The training material is presented over four separate modules, covering  key aspects of stroke awareness.  The modules are:

  • Module 1:Signs and Symptoms
    This first module gives an overview of what is covered in the course.  It then looks at what a stroke is and the common signs and symptoms.  The acronym FAST is used to explain the key symptoms.
    • Face
    • Arms
    • Speech
    • Time
  • Module 2: Types of Stroke and Their Symptoms
    This module looks at the types of strokes and their causes.  Three types of strokes will be covered.  They are:
    • Ischaemic Strokes
    • Haemorrhagic Strokes
    • Transient Ischaemic Attack (Mini Stroke)
  • Module 3: Diagnosis, Treatment and Recovery
    This module after looking at how a stroke is diagnosed and recovery options, looks at factors that might contribute to a stoke occurring.  These are:
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Diabetes
    • Atrial Fibrillation
    • High Cholesterol
    • Carotid Artery Disease
  • Module 4: Post Stroke Problems and Care
    This final module looks at several post stroke problems/issues.  Items covered are:
    • Post Stroke Fatigue
    • Emotional and Behavioural Changes
    • Swallowing Problems
    • Movement and Balance
    • Cognitive Complications
    • Pain and Headaches
    • Vision Problems
    • Incontinence
    • Taste and Smell

Who needs to go through this training?

This course is aimed primarily at people working in the health and care sector as they are likely to be working closely with people that are most at risk of having a stroke. This course can also be used as a refresher for first aiders to keep their knowledge up to date.
