Do I need to carry out a risk assessment for all activities?

No, Only those activities that have the potential to cause harm must be risk assessed.  The requirement to undertake a risk assessment primarily comes from the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999, which require the employer to assess the “risk to the health and safety of their employees”, amongst others.  If there is no risk, then there is no requirement to undertake an assessment.  If you do have to carry out an assessment, then following the process of risk assessment in this training will get you up to speed very quickly.

What modules are offered in the training?

The training material is presented over eight separate modules, covering  key aspects of the risk assessment process.  The modules are:

  • Module 1: The Basic
    This module will give a brief overview of the course and some of the key learning that will be covered.  It will emphasise the key objectives that each trainee should know at the end of the course, which are: what is a risk assessment? why are risk assessments important? and how to carry out a risk assessment?
  • Module 2: Legislation, Regulations and Civil Law
    This module is all about understanding the law as as it relates to risk assessments.  This will be a brief overview to set the risk assessment process into context.
  • Module 3: Strategy – Options and Elements
    This module will provide an overview of strategic options for, and elements of risk assessments.  It will consider the main options that are available when dealing with risk and the main elements that should be considered.  The terms avoidance, transfer, reduction and acceptance as they apply to risk assessments will be covered.
  • Module 4: Identifying Hazards
    This module will start step 1 of our 5 step process for carrying out a risk assessment.  It all begins with identifying hazards within the workplace that might cause harm.
  • Module 5: Who Might Be Harmed and Evaluating Risk
    This module will cover steps  2&3 of our 5 step process.  The different people groups who might be harmed and how they might be harmed during the activity (step 2), and how risks might be evaluated (step 3) will be presented.
  • Module 6: Evaluating Risks – The Practicalities
    This module is a continuation of step 3 in our 5 step process .  The idea of a risk matrix will be introduced and likelihood and severity will be explored as a means of evaluating risk.
  • Module 7: Recording & Reviewing
    This module will cover steps 4&5, the final stages of our 5 step process.  Trainees will understand the requirements for recording ALL significant risks (step 4) and and when risk assessments need to be reviewed (step 5)
  • Module 8: Management and Responsibilities
    This final module will look at who is responsible for what in the risk assessment process.  What  are the responsibilities of the employer? What responsibilities do employees and others have, in the risk assessment process?
