Positive mental health in the workplace comes from good management. There is strong evidence to suggest that workplaces that address mental wellbeing are more productive by up to 12%. Knowing what signs and symptoms to look out for or to expect in individuals is a key initial step that employers can provide to their employees.
This training once completed will not make employees an expert in mental health conditions, but it will provide key awareness skills where signs and symptoms can be identified and practical support solutions implemented to help.

How big is the problem of mental health in the workplace?
Evidence has shown that of all the sick days taken off from work in the UK, 12.5% can be attributed to mental health conditions. In 2018 there were 6,507 deaths by suicide in the UK, with men accounting for three quarters of that figure. The most common mental health problem in the UK is mixed anxiety and depression and is estimated that over 70 million days per year are lost from work in Britain.
What modules are offered in the training?
The training material is presented over three separate modules, covering key aspects of mental health awareness. The modules are:
- Module 1: What is Mental Illness and Prevalence Rates?
This module looks at the difference between mental health and mental illness. It looks at how mental health issues can happen to anyone in society and how a normal state of mental health can move towards mental illness.
- Module 2: Symptoms of Bi-Polar, Depression, Psychotic Disorder and Schizophrenia & Strategies to Help
This module looks at the most well known mental illnesses and approaches that can be used to once they are identified to support employees win the workplace. Mental illness will be broken down into two categories (Severe & Mild/Moderate) and where support strategies to can be more easily implemented.
- Module 3: Symptoms of Anxiety, Personality Disorder, Self-harming
This final module will follow on from the previous module concentrating on:
- Anxiety disorders
- Personality disorders
Who needs to go through this training?
Everyone. All employees in the workplace should have an understanding of mental health disorders as they can affect anyone irrespective of gender, social background, intelligence or other factors. The more employees that are aware of the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, the more effective support mechanism can be put in place to assist. Sometimes it’s easier for a colleague to see a change in behaviour than the person concerned.
