Why is this training important?

As an employer you are required to provide everyone in the workplace with appropriate health and safety training.  The training course will provide employees with a good understanding and grounding of health and safety principles in the workplace.  It will allow employees to understand how to to recognise hazards and avoid risks.

What modules are offered in the training?

The training material is presented over six separate modules, covering  key aspects of health and safety in the workplace.  The modules are:

  • Module 1: What is Health & Safety?
    This module gives a brief overview of what health and safety is in the workplace and provides examples to explain how, not following health and safety rules can have an impact not only on employees but also on the employer.  The Health & Safety Act and how it related to other Regulations is also covered.  Some key terminology used in health and safety and their definitions are introduced and these include: Hazard, Risk, Control Measure, Accidents & Incidents and Competent Person.
  • Module 2: Case Studies
    This module uses two case studies to explain why it is important to have appropriate systems in place in the workplace to manage health and safety risks.  The case studies might not be specific to your exact work environment, but the principles can be applied to any workplace.
  • Module 3: Corporate Manslaughter
    This module will introduce trainees to corporate manslaughter where companies and organisations can be prosecuted due to a serious management failure resulting in a gross breach of a duty of care towards their employees.
  • Module 4: Accidents
    This module is all about accidents at work.
  • Module 5: Fire, Electricity, DSE, and Manual Handling
    This module will expand on some of the common causes of accidents in the workplace and how they can be prevented.  These are: Fire, Electricity, Use of Display Screen Equipment (Workstations) and Manual Handling (Moving Objects)
  • Module 6: Emergencies, COSHH, PPE and Stress
    This final module looks at emergencies that can happen at work and what to do if someone gets ill or has an accident.  Reasons who some accident happen and the common types of accidents are discussed.  This is not a COSHH training course and therefore trainees are introduced to some of the more common effects of exposure to hazardous substances and the key routes that substances get into the body.  Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and the factors that can result in stress in the workplace is covered.

What will you get once you’ve completed the course?

Once completed you will be able to print off your IIRSM approved training certificate demonstrating that you have attained a sufficient level of understanding of the information presented in this course.  A copy of an example certificate can be seen here.
