Why do First Aid at Work refresher training?

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) recommends that all first aiders should undertake an annual refresher training course. This will help first-aiders maintain their skills and, where required, keep up to date with changes to first aid procedures.

Who should complete this training?

If you already hold a valid First Aid at Work (FAW) or an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificate, then you can use this training to keep your skills and knowledge up to date, while staying in line with the HSE’s recommendation for annual refresher training.

The information in this course will cover topics which only a FAW trained first aider can apply, so it’s important to ensure that you work within the scope of your certificate.

Please note, if your certificate has already expired, this training is not applicable and you will need to attend a classroom session for either a first aid at work or an emergency first aid at work requalification.

What does the course teach?

The refresher first aid at work course modules are tailored around the topic areas covered as part of the FAW or EFAW first aider training. Topic areas are as follows:

  • What is first aid training?
  • Barriers, ABCDs, and the recovery position
  • CPR and AEDs
  • How to manage choking, bleeding, sprains, shock and spinal injuries
  • Bone breakages
  • Head injuries
  • Heat and chemical burns (COSHH training might be required if you use chemicals)
  • Electric shocks
  • Eye injuries
  • Diabetes and anaphylactic shock
  • Heart attacks and strokes
  • How to report incidents and keep records

Duration is 150 minutes, but all modules don’t have to be taken at the same time

How much does the refresher training cost?
