Do I need to to be trained how to use a fire extinguisher?

Yes! There are several different types of fire extinguishers in respect of their contents and the type of fire on which they are used (this will be identified within the fire risk assessment).  There are several different ways of operating extinguishers, even ones of the same types.  For these reasons, adequate training is required for all types of extinguishers in use on the premises.  Extinguishers should only be used if you have been trained to use them or there is a need to use them to escape the building.

Many organisations choose to only allow fire marshals/wardens to be trained.  Whatever the decision of your organisation ensure that these arrangements are written within your health and safety policy and that staff know what is required of them in relation to using fire extinguishers.

What does the fire extinguisher training consist of?

This training is carried out completly online and therefore no need to have staff leaving the office.  This training will work on all devices, whether desktop or mobile.  The course is covered over 3 seperate modules (25 minutes) and they are:

  • Module 1: Fire Extinguishers
    This module introduces the various causes of fires and the importance of first getting people out of the building before one thinks of tacking the fire.  If a fire extinguisher needs to be used what are the hazards that need to be considered. The various types of fire extinguishers and their uses are also covered.
  • Module 2: Pre-Engagement Actions
    This module takes the trainee through the thought processes and actions that are necessary for the safe and effective use of a fire extinguisher.  The pre-engagement actions covered are:

    • operating the fire alarm;
    • making others aware of your intention to tackle the fire;
    • turning off any electrical or gas equipment (if applicable);
    • looking at the burning stage of the fire (this is covered in Module 1) and
    • identifying the fuel that is burning.
  • Module 3: Using a Fire Extinguisher
    This final module looks at how to use the different types of fire extinguishers.  At the end of this module various simulated fire scenarios will be presented based on the training provided.  This is an interactive session and each scenario will require the trainee to take the appropriate action.  This is a lot of fun and you will even get to use the  different types of fire extinguishers to put out the fires.

What will I receive on completion of the course?
